Evergreen Youth & Family Services offers hands-on experience working with youth, young adults, and families facing challenges such as homelessness, trauma, abuse, and neglect. This is a great opportunity to develop real-world skills, gain insight into social services, and make a meaningful impact.
 
Supervision & Support
- 
All interns and volunteers are assigned supervisors based on their role and location.
 
- 
Social work and psychology interns are supervised by qualified professionals in their field.
 - 
Volunteers work with designated staff members, such as the Volunteer Coordinator or Program Director.
 - 
All supervision is documented in accordance with state licensing requirements.

Learn about crisis intervention, youth housing, prevention services, and child protection.

Participate in client intakes and individual care plans.

Learn about interagency services like street outreach, suicide prevention, and mental health counseling.

Get familiar with our referral networks and partner organizations.

Engage in Activities with Youth

Help plan and lead recreational and life skills activities.

Teach creative coping strategies and build relationships with youth.
 - 
Facilitate structured activities that encourage learning and engagement.

Build Practical Skills

Improve public speaking, crisis intervention, and behavior management skills.
 - 
Learn about mental health, trauma-informed care, mandated reporting, and professional boundaries.
 - 
Gain experience in case management, psychological theories, and assessments.
 - 
Conduct group sessions on topics relevant to youth.

Develop Personal & Professional Growth
- 
Identify strengths and areas for growth through reflection and feedback.

Be proactive, listen to supervisors, and take initiative.

Complete a strengths inventory and a Myers-Briggs assessment.

Who We’re Looking For
- 
Experience or strong interest in working with youth and families.
 - 
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
 - 
Understanding or willingness to learn harm reduction, stages of change, and motivational interviewing.
 - 
Must pass background checks and follow Evergreen’s policies.

Internship vs Volunteer Requirements
 
- 
Volunteers (Less than 80 hours)
- 
Background check completed through free online resources.
 - 
Sign key policies.
 - 
Cannot have a caseload or be alone with clients.
 - 
No agency email or vehicle use.
 
 -

Interns (Typically 300-400 hours)
- 
Full background check through MDH.
 - 
Sign key policies.
 - 
Can work independently with clients and have a caseload.
 - 
May receive an agency email and vehicle use approval (if eligible).
